Silk Comforters

Silk comforters are the diamond equivalent of the jewellery world. When people mention luxury comforter sets, the first image that comes to is always smooth and free flowing silk.

Whether a silk comforter sets made from 100% pure silk is a very important aspect when choosing your silk comforters. There are many comforter sets out there which claim to be made of silk, when they are actually satin.

Most people cannot tell the difference between a satin comforter set and a real silk comforter set. Satin feels and looks like silk, but it is actually a man-made fabric. Real silk comforters on the other hand are woven from silk harvested from silkworm cocoons. Given that it takes about 10,000 silk cocoons to make a single comforter set, there is little wonder why real silk comforter sets are so much more expensive than satin set.

Silk comforter sets have unsurpassed quality in terms of warmth and comfort as bed linens, therefore since ancient times; they have been the material of choice for royalty and nobles rich enough to afford one.

Satin have come very closed to mimicking real silk, and as mentioned earlier, few people can actually tell the difference by looking or even by touch. But there remains one property of silk that satin cannot mimic, which is the hypoallergenic quality of silk.

Silk comforters require little maintenance because on its own, they are relatively immune to bugs and fungi and they are also very few cases of recorded allergies related to silk. Silk comforters can be sunned once or twice every year to maintain its freshness, and if washing is really required, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

Silk comforters are making a comeback with the rise of China, and many of the rich and effluent are opting to go only for genuine silk as a sign of status. But at the same time, there are those who are environmentally conscious who are concerned with the amount of resource and energy required to produce silk, especially when an affordable alternative like satin is available.

Producing satin comforter sets are less taxing on the Earth’s resources, and they function nearly as well as silk ones. To opt for silk in face of such a viable alternative is frowned upon by many as pure vanity.

But of course, supporters of silk comforters claim that silk comforters last much longer than satin ones and they are made from renewable resources, silkworms and mulberry trees, rather than plastics, which satin is derived from. And indeed, if well taken-cared of, silk comforters can last for a very very long time. In fact, Chinese families are known to pass down silk comforters as family or bridal heirlooms, testament to their longevity.

In the end, whether it is silk or satin comforters that you choose, it is very much a matter of preference. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in your sleep and you take good care of your comforters for it to last a long time.
