For most of us, a bed consists of 4 main things; a mattress, a bed sheet, a pillow and a blanket. So when we start talking about comforters and bedspreads, there’s little wonder that confusion begins to set in.
Are comforters bed sheets? Or are they blankets? Some of us may know that we can have comforters or bedspreads, not necessary both of them. Besides comforters and bedspreads, there are also duvets, another familiar, yet vague term to those who are not experts in bedding. So what are the differences between comforters, bedspreads and duvets?
To understand the differences, we must first describe the elements of a traditional bed in detail. Firstly there’s the bed frame and mattress; and on top of the mattress is the simplest bed sheet. Bed sheets are used mainly to protect the mattress from dirt since it’s easier to clean the bed sheet than the mattress itself. And on top of the sheets, are the bedding which is stuffed with comfortable materials for coziness and lastly, the blankets for keeping warm.
Comforters, bedspreads and duvets are sometimes used as bedding but usually they are better classified as a form of blanket. So why are they named differently, and what are the differences?
Comforters
Comforters are used with a top sheet and bottom sheet with the comforter in the center because comforters are difficult to wash and bed sheets are used for protecting them. They are filled with a variety of materials, including goose down, cotton, or polyester among others to provide warmth to the user and are used interchangeably as blankets and mattress bedding.
When used as blankets, the user sleeps under the bottom sheet and on hotter days, such as in summer, they can be used as bedding, with the user sleeping on top of the top sheet with a light blanket over the user.
Bedspreads
Bedspreads can act also as blankets but they aren’t as good for keeping the user warm. They are big than comforters and are consider more decorative than actual blankets. But in warm tropical climates, bedspreads are used as light blankets. Some people even have purely decorative bedspreads for their beds and sleep with duvets or comforters at night.
Duvets
Duvets are more easily confused with comforters in the way they are used, but they are easily differentiate by their design. Both duvets and comforters are fluffy and filled and can serve to keep its user warm. But duvets are designed to be used with covers for washing and therefore can be used as a standalone piece of bedding for used with bedding only. They eliminate the multiple layers of bed sheets and bedding used with comforters, and some people prefer this less ‘heavy’ bed for sleeping. But in extremely cold weathers, duvets are unable to provide the same kind of warmth that comforters provides.
Unless you where you live prohibits or dictates the need thick blankets, your choice of comforters, bedspreads or duvets, for your bed is somewhat of a personal preference. But there are, of course, a whole lot of choices to be had between each of those types of blankets.
