Continued from Comforter Fill Materials Part 1...
Silk
Silk comforters originated from China, where silk was first produced. Just as silk is well known for its smoothness and cool properties, silk as a fill materials provides great comfort to the user. Silk comforters and bedspreads are extremely light weight because of silk’s low density. They can be made much thicker than normal comforters and bedspreads without becoming too heavy to sleep in. They provide great insulation, yet at the same time, it is very breathable. This makes silk comforters and bedspreads useable not only in cold winters, but equally comfortable in mild summer.
Silk comforters and bedspreads are exceptional in the aspect that it is naturally hypoallergenic. They are also immune to mold and fungi and insects like bed bugs and mites don’t survive in them either. It is easy to see why it is the ultimate comfort material. Comfortable, clean and furthermore, they do not normally need washing; sunning them is sufficient.
However, if you ever get your silk comforter dirty by accident, you will have to send it for dry cleaning since silk fillings are damaged by water. To avoid such unfortunate instances, comforters, especially silk ones are always used with a cover.
Bamboo
One of the newest fill materials to hit the market in recent times is the bamboo. Bamboo was used in ancient China as pillow fillings before, so it’s merely being rediscovered today and being used in ever more expensive comforters and bedspreads.
The ancient Chinese already knew that bamboo made excellent fill materials because they have very strong insulation qualities and at the same time very breathable. Bamboo, like silk, is hypoallergenic and immune to both insects, bacteria or fungus alike. In many parts of Asia, bamboo is used to make furniture and other house hold tools, and all made using bamboo that was cut from the forest without any processing. This shows the staying power of bamboo against microorganisms.
The bamboo you know might be hard and sturdy, nothing the likes of a soft, fluffy comforter filling. But bamboo fibers are actually soft, smooth and round. While they are probably not as smooth as silk, they’re comparable to other plant fiber materials like cotton.
Bamboo fillings can be washed easily, but like down, they do not dry easily. A good sun is always the preferred method of cleaning your bamboo comforter or bedspread.
