Care for Comforters and Bedspreads

Your comforters and bedspreads don’t come cheap and getting them from the store back to your home requires significant amount of effort. Therefore it is important that you care for them properly to ensure their longevity.

Caring for your comforters and bedspreads requires cleaning of course, but you don’t actually want to clean your comforters and bedspreads frequently. Not only are they large and bulky, making it difficult to wash, they are also delicate materials that will degrade each time you wash them.

The fill materials within a comforter will clump and become beady when overly washed, thread on the covers may run, resulting in filling leaks. Yet, if you don’t wash them, they may become susceptible to mold, fungi, insects or simply degrade from your bodily sweat.

The best way to care of your comforters and bedspreads is to use a cover over them. You can wash the covers frequently to keep your comforters relatively clean, and then only send your comforters and bedspreads in for cleaning only once every few years.

In fact, some people use double layer covers to give additional protection to their comforters and bedspreads. In the event of spills or stains from your lazy breakfast in bed, you can be sure that the stain doesn’t get onto the comforter or bedspread, especially if the second layer of cover remains relatively untouched.

Having a second layer of cover is also useful since you can rotate the layers of covers on the outside; allow you more design choices and also extending the lifespan of your covers themselves.

But just because you shouldn’t wash your comforters and bedspreads frequently doesn’t mean you don’t need to care for them using other methods. Mold and fungi can still creep into your linens even with double layers of covers. It is suggested to take out your comforters and bedspreads for a routine bake in the sun from time to time. This keeps your comforters and bedspreads completely dry; removing any sweat that might have gotten onto them overnight and also dispels any odour, keeping them fresh and smelling of sunshine. Ultraviolet rays from the sun will also kill any mold or bacteria that have taken up residences in your comforters and bedspreads.

If sunny weather is not readily available, at least hang them up in a room with free flowing air to air dry your comforters and bedspreads.

Finally, when you really have to wash your comforters and bedspreads, do read cleaning instructions carefully. If in doubt, always look for a professional, even then, you should be careful about who you give your comforters and bedspreads to.

Not all professionals can handle every type of materials, especially delicate ones like silk or down. Make sure you highlight specific instructions or requirement when you send them to your laundry.
